Linz-based mechanical engineering company WFL previously used halogen lamps to illuminate their processing area. But halogen has its weaknesses.

The large design of halogen lamps only permits suboptimum positioning in the processing area and the life cycle of the bulbs is relatively short. The high temperature development is also cause for concern. The longer the processing duration, the hotter the workpiece can become, which is not a good option for one of Europe's most innovative mechanical engineering companies.

WFL is the inventor of Millturn Technology
“Millturn” stands for milling and turning in one setting. WFL not only invented the integration of several processing technologies in one CNC machine. The company is also the world's only manufacturer of multifunctional rotary drill milling centers that are capable of saving up to 70 percent turn-around time and easily one-quarter of manufacturing costs. Companies in the aerospace, automotive and shipbuilding sectors use the technical and economic advantages of Millturn Technology, as do printing press, molding machine and machine tool manufacturers. WFL has even provided Millturns to the development centers of several Formula 1 teams.

“At WFL, we want to use innovative solutions to give our customers a competitive advantage.”
This corporate philosophy took WFL in search of an optimized lighting solution for the processing area and brought them together with Waldmann. The Engineer of Light presented a solution that precisely satisfied the requirements profile and also became one of WFL's high innovation standards:

HEAD LED, the Mini among machine luminaires.
The HEAD LED has a housing diameter of 49.5 mm and a height of 23
mm. Due to the minimal design, adaption points can be integrated in the processing area, which were previously inconceivable for the positioning of luminaires. For example, directly on the head of the rotary drill milling machine. The optimum assembly position and the angle of illumination were jointly defined by Waldmann and WFL: There is a HEAD LED to the right and one to the left of the movable head of the rotary drill milling machine. This means that the light always moves along with the head. The tool and workpiece are ideally illuminated in every situation.

The art is to get the maximum light from minimal designs.
Waldmann has developed a special lens for the HEAD LED, which is based on the principle of the Fresnel lens, which we know from lighthouses. In addition to a high output, the luminaire fulfills further important requirements for use in the processing area: The housing is resistant to wear, lubricants and cooling agents, as well as bombardment of chips. It is also waterproof as defined in IP 67. The protective glass is resistant to sharp metal chips that bombard the luminaire at high speed. And due to the low heat development, no lubricants or cooling agents can burn into the protective glass because LEDs don't give off any heat.

WFL is proud of this individual bright lighting solution for the processing area in the CNC machine. The use of further Waldmann LED innovations is already being discussed: the new FLAT LED for illuminating tool magazines.

Conclusion:
Waldmann LED light is the perfect light for the workplace. It supports the working quality, gives customers and processers added safety and thus helps to avoid errors.
